Book Design
Above is the cover for the Japanese edition of Heartbeat. They've added an interesting design element inside, the use of flip-book-type art in the lower left-hand corners:
As you flip through the book, the runners . . . run:
And run . . .
You really need to hold the book and flip the pages to get the full effect.
I like it. You?

I love it. Isn't that the way the early Disney cartoons were created?
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting effect and yes, I do like it!
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting and interactive idea. It would be great if at the end one of the runners, I don't know, tripped or something. I've never seen this in a book before. Do they discuss this with you before putting an element like this in?
ReplyDeleteMy boys would love this!
ReplyDeleteWhen your books are translated into another language, do they have free range as to how they present it, or are you consulted about all that?
ReplyDeleteI hope you are enjoying warmer weather down there. We are really freezing up here.
I love it. And I'm sure readers do, too.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea! I agree with Brattcat.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine did a book of cat poetry some years ago. It was illustrated with marvelous woodcuts. At the bottom of each page was a tabby cat; flipping the pages had the cat trotting happily through the book. The book was "Lap It Up - Cat Poems" by Robert Morris, illustrated by Sandra Lacey, Meerkat Publications, 1997.
Rebekah and Lori: My contracts w/foreign publishers allows them 'free range' with design and title, and I'm always intrigued by their interpretations.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun idea! Is there any chance that there might be an English reprint with that addition? My students would absolutely love it.
ReplyDeleteMrs. V: Not that I know of.
