Reflections

Inside and Outside
in Maine

Sometimes
I need to take a break from
words.

If I tried to describe this photo
I would ruin it.

Bears

Meet Joe (left) and Cream (right)
brother and sister

They're three feet tall
and beloved by our grandchildren
and me

Some people seem surprised
that we brought them along
with us
when we moved recently

What?
How could we not?

When I am old and ailing
I want these two nearby.

Communing With the Animals

So:

We went to the an-i-mal fair
(you hear that tune in your head?)

the cows and the lambs were there
(changed the words a little)

. . .

and young people, too

Why do I write for children?

Look at that joy.
That's why.

Communing With Other Writers

Although I've had to curtail travel this year
because of our move to Maine
last weekend I spoke at an NESCBWI conference
(New England Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators)
in not-too-far-away
Springfield, MA.

So refreshing to be among fellow
wordsmiths
and
artsmiths

So much energy and enthusiasm
for
books

I had the chance to meet
Grace Lin*
and her bambino
(that's us above)
and
Kate Messner*
and
many other coooool people.

Now I'm back home with the
boxes
boxes
boxes.
