Catching Bats and Ideas
I took this photo last night at sunset, trying to capture the bats flying just below the branches, black flashes silhouetted against the lake. There were about a dozen of them zinging back and forth. I took six or seven photos in quick succession, sure that I had caught them, but I don't see them now.
When I am in book-writing mode, I often try to capture quick flashes that flit through my mind–a scene, an image, a snip of dialogue–but sometimes they elude me, like the bats. I know they were there, but where have they gone?

So beautiful - and you have captured so many of those beautiful flashes for us in your writing over the years. xoxo
ReplyDeleteYou have many talents! This picture is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteHugs and a nice week ahead, full of great inspirations,
Léia
I wonder if that's why it's so hard to get photographs of fairies, too.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo, Sharon, even if you can't see the bats. What a lovely evening!
ReplyDeleteThat happens to me too. Especially when I just wake up, and I know I dreamed something I want to use in my story. But I can't quite bring it forward even though I know it's there. The subconscious is stubborn!
You pointed the camera and snapped the shutter in faith.
ReplyDeleteGood evening Sharon! What an outstanding catch. Not too many things are more beautiful than sunset on the lake...and boy do you have the perfect view.
ReplyDeleteYou must get so much inspiration sitting at your desk. Write on!
Hmmm... no bats here. (I enlarged the photo.)
ReplyDeleteQuite mysterious... first a spying squirrel and now a colony of invisible bats swooping across the lake near your house. :-(
I have a sister that is deathly afraid of bats. Several years ago she went camping with her family and one evening she noticed a bat flying overhead. She started to scream and run through the park, which attracted the bat to her. I'm sure other campers were startled right out of their sleeping bags by my sister's blood curdling wails. :-)
Have you ever seen a baby bat close up? A baby anything usually have some degree of cuteness. Baby bats? Not so much.
Love the peacefulness of your photo... really beautiful!
Perhaps the bats have gone looking for ideas and when they return, they'll whisper them in your ear.
ReplyDeleteOnly very professionnal photographers can catch pictures of bats, they fly too fast! But your picture is THE great caught anyway, with this beauyful evening mood..
ReplyDeleteSo funny, I have had this happen to me many times. After letting a few ideas that could have been literary magic slip my conscious, I started carrying a pocket compostion tablet. The moments I have captured, often by my muses (my kids) are like gold pouring out of my pen.
ReplyDeleteYour blog post title drew me in. Just this past Saturday my post was a poem about bats. I have a different feeling about bats!
