There's an awful lot
of local pressure
for
my next book
to be about
a
cow.

Mm.

The Boy on the Porch

(Coming September 3, 2013)

This is the newest book, out in a few weeks.

The title floated in my head as I woke one day two years ago, although I did not recognize it as a title. It was merely a phrase, insistent enough that it stuck with me through the morning.  The following day, it appeared again as I awoke, and later that day after a nap, again: "the boy on the porch."  A few days later, again.  And again.  And again.

Okay, okay, okay.  I will write to find out about the boy on the porch!

Student Art: Decorated Envelopes

Fan mail with illustrated envelopes
makes me smile.

Why don't more of us
indulge in this art?

Maybe you will send a letter
to someone today
and decorate its envelope

Mm?

Communing with water and light and rocks . . .

Late afternoon light
mid-coast Maine
the air so clear

Owl's Head

You want to step in that water
and
climb on those rocks
don't you?

Communing with Flowers

Summer:  Maine

The flowers have erupted

all the more appreciated
after the browns and grays of winter

the colors so rich and pure
the petals intricate and lush
or
pure and simple

Nothing we create is as perfect
but
we
keep
attempting
. . .

in
story
or
art

but

what a high bar
nature
sets

and
I'll bow
to that

Communing With Rope

Spring almost summer
in this Maine coastal town:

blooming rope

!

I didn't need rope, but this display made me wish I did. I stood there for a long time admiring the colors, wondering what I might use some for.  I couldn't decide.

When I joined my husband at the checkout, I saw that he had chosen a length of red and yellow rope.

"What's it for?"

"Dunno.  Something."

Love that length of rope. Not sure why.
