Strangers

A few days before Monday's
surprise snow
we were dive-bombed
(lightly)
on our porch
by five or six of these
moths?
butterflies?

They seemed more moth
than butterfly

similar to Monarch
but not quite
similar to Viceroy
but not quite

anyone know what it is?

Something is sprouting here -
I can't remember what -
but love the surprise
and the energy
of these tenacious purple sprouts.

Any guesses
what plant this might be?

Speaking of strangers
(the moth and the sprouts)
a favorite literary convention
of mine is
a stranger comes to town.

Just writing that phrase
gets my brain
jumping!

Do you have a favorite
stranger comes to town
story?

I will quit
asking you
questions
right
now.

Spring Snow

Last week
in shorts and tee shirt
I was digging in the garden

This morning
the snow began

and it snowed and snowed
all day long

and is still snowing now

like the white pages
of a manuscript:

a few pages at first
and then more
and more
until

it is so thick and deep
you could get
lost
in
it.

Small World

Sharon Creech, Walter Creech
Southport, NC
2012

A couple weeks ago at an arts' festival in Southport, NC,
my husband and I wandered into this booth
and discovered that the artist's name is
Walter Creech.

More of his art is here:

We're probably related
in a distant way
to a slew of Scottish brothers
who settled in America.

Funny old small world.

Morning Has Broken

I love that Cat Stevens' song
"Morning Has Broken"

morning: with all its promise
like the beginning of a story

all that world
ready to wake up

so much world
so much
so

Sunset and Home

Home last night
after three months away
in time to see the sunset

like the ending of a good book
pulling all the colors together
in one final, enveloping display

ahh
you say
ahhhhhhhhh

Decorated Envelopes

I love receiving decorated/illustrated envelopes.

Young readers are generous with theirs:

I'm going to start a collection of these.

Meanwhile - here is a note added to one envelope
that makes me smile smile smile:

(If you don't understand the reference, ask someone over 30.)
