Winter in Maine

Yes, it's cold in Maine
but
people know how to
take advantage of winter.

Dressed in layers
they celebrate the ice
the blue sky

and
ice skating
beside the harbor.

This is Saturday
at the library
in Camden, Maine.

The Well

My grandparents lived without indoor plumbing
and raised eight children.

I was afraid of the well
because one of my cousins
threatened to push me into it
down into that deep black water

but I was also drawn to the well
to the novelty of it
and begged to fetch the water.

When I now use the phrase
refilling the well
to describe breaks between books
and the gathering of new inspiration,
in my mind I see
that well, above,

deep and dark and full.

Between Books

When you finish writing a book
you might feel as bare as that tree above

and you need to stand there a while
and soak up that white snow
that blue ocean
that blue sky
that crisp air

until you're ready
to come to life
again

Cows

Our granddaughter loves cows
and we love being able to see her with cows.

The black and white ones are
Belted Galloways
also known as Oreo cows.

One odd thing we discovered is that
the two cows she is touching, above,
share names with two of my characters:
Zinnie (at left, as in Chasing Redbird)
and Zola (at right, as in The Unfinished Angel.)

Heh.
