The Basketball Poets

In honor of
World Read Aloud Day

I had the privilege of making my annual visit
to the Basketball Poets
of Supply, NC.

The current group are middle schoolers
who combine reading and writing poetry
with playing basketball

I know, unusual, mm?

And very, very cool.

Here are a couple of the poets
reciting their poems:

(more pics of poets to come)

After they recited their poems
they moved out on the court.

I sure love this group.

Here is their coach and the founder of the Basketball Poets,
Marty Mentzer (at left):

That's me on the right.

What a day!

  1. How creative is that! You do some very interesting/exciting things!

  2. Well, that is a unique event! Good for Mary for planning and integrating the two.

  3. Okay--that is cool. All of it. :)

  4. It's wonderful to see such young boys practising poetry! it will bring them pleasure all their life long, thanks to you and Marty! Great!

  5. poetry and sports, a perfect combination.

  6. How wonderful that you get to experience these inspirational young people, and they you. That is a wise coach indeed.

  7. Il est bon de retrouver vos oeuvres après plus de 6 semaines d'absence... Je rentre tout juste des Philippines...
    Gros bisous

  8. What next? Football poets? Tennis poets? One of my favorite kids is a pole vaulting poet. The possibilities are endless. You continue to inspire us all.

  9. As a former Middle School English teacher, I cannot tell you how thrilling this appears to me!!

  10. That is a charming combination! Just wonderful!

  11. what a happy looking author, what a happy looking coach.
