Storm and Baby Squirrels

Yesterday morning a fierce storm blew through here, shearing the tops of solid, old trees.  Scary, but no damage to people or structures.

Today, when we were investigating the tree damage, we had this hollow hickory taken down, and -

- we heard squeaking.  Out of a knothole, fell these baby squirrels:

We saved a section of the tree and, using sterile gloves, placed the babies back inside. We could hear the mother scolding from nearby, so we know she's aware.

I was going to write this morning, but . . . I got distracted.

  1. Ohhhhh! Squirrels occasionally drive me batty, but those babies make my heart melt! I'm sure their mother will take good care of them now.

  2. What a storm. It missed us, but there was a tornado in Wayne County that really wrecked 4 houses, flattened a barn and knocked down trees. I hope the Mom found her baby squirrels.

  3. Oh my! I hope they make it and live happy squirrel lives, but they are not the most adorable babies. ;)

  4. Thank goodness you were around to help those baby squirrels. That tree appeared hollow so no wonder it blew down!

  5. I've never seen a baby squirrel. Amazing. Has the mother returned to them?

  6. Yes, the mother has returned and moved them.

  7. What a story, Sharon! I can't say the babies are cute. How wonderful you could help save them. Have you read Cynthia Rylant's book GOOSEBERRY PARK? It is also a squirrel-saving story.

  8. I tracked your storm on radar as it swept across eastern NYState and headed over VT, NH to Maine. Around 5:30 PM we got the rain, and thunder, but that was about it. Indeed, you got a violent edge of it. Be positive... think: Firewood!

  9. Oh, the photo. Look at those thick little legs. It's amazing that you were able to rescue them.

    Sorry about the damage though.
