Taking a Break . . .

I saw signs like this one, "Sono in giardino" ("I'm in the garden"), in a village in southern Switzerland. Hung on an outside door, it directed visitors around the back to the garden, where the owner was puttering or reclining. I found this sign in the local Migros there and brought it home to use, most often, on my office door.

When I use it, it usually means I am taking a break--maybe in the giardino, maybe elsewhere.  Oddly, though, I also use it to mean the opposite:  'I'm working; don't disturb.'   When my husband sees it, he disregards it anyway. To grandchildren, it is invisible.  And that's okay.  It's still a nice sign.

  1. I love that - "to grandchildren, it is invisible."
    It is a nice sign.

  2. Oh, but you are always in your 'garden'...could that be why those who know you best ignore the sign...they have a sort of 'what else is new' response...or perhaps your husband and grandchildren don't read Italian?

  6. Agree with you 100% about signs... Right now I'm alone and don't need one like this.

I'm writing here to answer you, since you left two comments on my blog. Here's what I wrote before I realized I'd sent it to the 'noreply' address!

"Well, for heaven's sake, hello! I have read most of your books. I too am a children's author, having written three here for Kreativni Centar, Serbia's leading children's publishing company. They're in dual editions (Serbian/English). Haven't done much for kids in a while, since I have returned to my previous job of teaching, which seems to take all my energy nowadays.

Thank you for reading my blog, and I hope you'll be back!

"Bibi," who is really Pat! Bibi is my dog...."

  7. Signs are meant to be read and ignored. This is a pretty one and harder to ignore.

  8. Hello,
I think the sign is really sweet. So, what do you like to plant? Flowers, shrubs, or vegetables, etc.? I just wanted to add that I ADORE your books. You are my favorite author of all time. I extremely enjoyed reading Walk Two Moons and right now I'm reading it for the 8th time.

  10. Cool. Veggies and flowers are a good combination. A little bit of beauty and a little bit of purpose. Though you could say that beauty is a purpose. So which of your books is most emotional/meaningful to you?
