Ruby Holler

This is the new jacket for Ruby Holler.

In the book, Ruby Holler represents a place
of great natural beauty
and comfort
and safety

Do you have a Ruby-Holler-kind of place -
somewhere that represents
beauty, comfort and safety
for you?

International Dot Day

International Dot Day grew out of Peter Reynolds' book, The Dot.

On International Dot Day, September 15,
you are encouraged to make your mark
by starting, simply, with a dot
and then seeing where that takes you
and then signing
your dot
or your dot explosion!

See Fablevision here for more information
and for clips of students celebrating Dot Day

and then see here for librarian Mr. Schu's blog about Dot Day

. . .

and then, you know,
go make your mark,
mm?

You don't have to wait
until September 15,
mm?

A Dot and a Dash

I'm dashing off to NYC for a few days

but am leaving you with

this colorful dot

I made it for

International Dot Day

last year

and when I return

I'll give you information

about how to add your own dot

to this year's Dot Day

(September)

Meanwhile,

ciao, bellas,

New Book Jackets

Most of my books will receive new covers over the course of the next year or two -
updating and unifying the 'look.'

Above are the first five to get their makeover plus the new book (The Great Unexpected.)

What do you think?

Do you have a favorite?

The Basketball Poets, continued

More
Basketball Poets:

In previous years
there were more girls in this group
but now it seems the boys
are in the majority.

I liked this sign over the gym door:

The Basketball Poets

In honor of
World Read Aloud Day
(today)

I had the privilege of making my annual visit
to the Basketball Poets
of Supply, NC.

The current group are middle schoolers
who combine reading and writing poetry
with playing basketball
!

I know, unusual, mm?

And very, very cool.

Here are a couple of the poets
reciting their poems:

(more pics of poets to come)

After they recited their poems
they moved out on the court.

I sure love this group.

Here is their coach and the founder of the Basketball Poets,
Marty Mentzer (at left):

That's me on the right.

What a day!
